ABOUT CRUSTACEANS

Crustaceans are a diverse group of primarily aquatic invertabrates consisting of animals like Crabs, Lobsters, Shrimp, Barnacles and Isopods.
Crustaceans are one of our planets oldest types of lifeforms, with fossil records indicating speciemens exisiting in times reaching as far back as the Cambrian Explosion 538 million years ago which makes crustaceans among one of the first appearances of complex lifeforms.

Similarly to insects, crustaceans are classified by their hard exoskeleton and their three destinctive body regions (head, thorax and abdomen or cephalothorax in the case of crabs) but are unique from them due to the additon of having paired appendages such as claws seen in crabs and Lobsters or the moveable plates on barnacles.

Below you will find a comprehensive list of all the crustaceans I have observed in the wild around Whyalla and its surrounding regions.
